It’s been months since we’ve had consistent rain in Santa Barbara, Southern California. As much as I adore the sunshine, I do miss the ever-changing weather of our home in Wellington, New Zealand. Last night, and this evening, we’ve had proper rain – that lasts for more than an hour and leaves real puddles behind!
I thought the rain was definitely deserving of a little poem π
Rain in the black of night
The rain came in the black of night
A steady, melodic, soothing sound
After months of dry nights, all the same. The clouds stole the light from the sky
Refraining the glow of moon and stars
Leaving the rain to take centre stage.I sat in the warm, calm, autumn night
listening with welcome ears
enoying the cool wetness of
rain drops on bare skin
feeling the relief of the plants around
so long starved of water from nature’s hand.‘I missed you rain’, I felt like saying
I missed your presence in the black of night
The promise you bring after months of dry
I didn’t quite realise, until you returned
How much I needed you. You, rain, take the black of night and make it fine.

Whereas I’m just desperate for the rain to stop right now, I’m sure I;d miss it if it were gone though. Mich x
I know – too much of anything gets tiresome after a while! It’s sunny again here this morning, which I admit is rather nice! Hope the rain eases up for you soon x
You managed to make rain sound quite appealing to me and I live in Scotland where it rains all the bloody time so that is quite an achievement!
As a child, I remember finding proper pounding rain quite exciting. You’ve reminded me of that and about how wonderful rain can be. I love the verse that begins “I sat in the still warm autumn night” very evocative – I was almost there with you!
Ha, ha, thanks! I’ll take that as a compliment π It has been a very long time without it for us and we are more used to it in Wellington, New Zealand, so it’s been a strange four months of ‘blue sky and sunshine’ every day – I know some folk wouldn’t get bored of that – but I love the ‘wild’ elements a little too much!
We spend a lot of our time dissing the rain in the UK, but it can be fantastic stuff too… The sight (and relief!) of a HUGE electrical storm after days and days of increasingly charged and oppressive heat is marvelous, especially if you’re tucked up warm and safe indoors and watching through a window. Lovely poem. #Prose4T
This is lovely – the rain can be such a relief after a hot dry spell. I love the heavy persistant drum of it at night. Luckily on the west coast of scotland I get to listen to that on a regular basis… x
Thanks Helen, my dear Grandfather was from west Scotland – he grew up in Tarbert Loch Fyne. I’ve never visited, but I’d love to one day x
This is fabulously descriptive. A little drop of rain really does solve an awful lot of issues :). I love rain in the heat. Thanks for sharing with Prose for Thought xx
I do love the feeling of rain in the heat – there is something so refreshing about it. Your poem captures that perfectly π Thanks for linking to Prose for Thought x
