ABBA – Spanning Generations

Posted on November 29, 2008 by BritMumInNZ

There is so much music that spans generations and holds a special place in the hearts of families.

I was born in the early 1970’s in the height of ABBA mania. Every Thursday evening I’d stay up to watch ‘Top of the Pops’ and dance around my parents living room. Of all the songs I remember most from my childhood – Super Trouper is the one that rings in my ears. You know how children feel every emotion with every cell of their body? How they express feelings with so much movement and expression. Well, Super Trouper and its, ‘lights are gonna find me, shining like the sun, smiling, having fun, feeling like a number one…’ made me feel as though the sun’s beams had filled every living cell in my body and as though I could walk in the clouds and never feel blue.

Since Dan brought home ‘Mamma Mia’ DVD the other week the songs of ABBA have once again filled my heart. Charlotte and Sophie are enthralled by the magnetic beats and catchy tunes. We’ve been dancing our socks off and singing our hearts out. It feels me with so much joy to share this music with them, that meant so much to me as a child.

Today a package arrived from my dear Mum and Dad, which I was told I could open prior to Christmas! Inside, was the music to ABBA and a note to say it was sent a little early so I would have some time to practice before Christmas! And practice I will!

I’ve spent this evening in a world of music and escapism. There are two things in this world that make me feel most at peace and connected with something bigger than I can describe – music and nature. Well, today, I’ve been blessed with both and I can’t thank my parents enough for their never-ending support and love.
