Such a treat! My friend Kathy texted me this evening with the happy news of dolphins in Evans Bay. Dan was on his way home and had caught the news via Twitter. As soon as he got home we rushed down our dinner and bolted out the door.
We don’t have a great zoom or a flash camera, but here’s what we managed to get…

They came within ten metres of where we stood watching and it was magical to see them. They were busy circling round, with a few lucky kayakers and sailing boats getting a chance to get up close. The most perfect evening after a true summer’s day.

Whow…what super footage of the dolphins swimming in Evans Bay..they must be one of our favourite animals and we have been privileged to see them in various parts of beautiful New Zealand.
They always take our breath away and just such a joy to watch.
I would have eaten my dinner quickly too as it is a sight not to be missed.Wonderful !!
Awesome!! You guys are so lucky to have that on your doorstep!
Thanks for sharing this amazing scene. I would have missed it had it not been for you. Thank you.
Oh that is so exciting!!
Isn’t it magical when this happens? Once I was sitting at my desk in a boring central Wellington office building when a co-worker shouted ‘Dolphins!’ Everyone went rushing over to the windows and in the middle of the hectic work day suddenly there we were – all ooing and aahing at the dolphins. It’s one of my favourite memories of all time.
very, very cool X
Ohhh – thats just wonderful!
I managed to see some once while on the ferry coming back to Wellington. As MOM says – everyone rushed to the bow to see them.
So majestic.
They’re back! Today (Sunday 13 Dec)I saw a pod of about half a dozen adults and baby ones frolicking in the waves just off the wharf behind Te Papa. They were spectacular. So close you could almost touch them. With any luck they’ll stick around all summer.
That’s wonderful! How magic to see them so close. Finger’s crossed for lots more sightings this summer. I heard Orcas were in the harbour last week too!
