Wardrobe Wednesday – Back to the Ball (in honour of Kate & Wills!)

It’s a historic Wardrobe Wednesday waking up to the news that Wills is finally to make an honest woman of Kate. Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton next year and I think it’s so touching that he gave her his mother’s engagement ring.

“As you may have recognised it’s my mother’s engagement ring so it’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it’s the two put together,” he said. “It’s my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement and fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Reuters: William and Kate Middleton became engaged while on holiday in Kenya last month.

I came across the news at 3.00 am this morning, whilst feeding Alice back to sleep. I scrolled down my Google Reader on my iPhone and read Vegemitevix’s post, ‘Vegemitevix’s Engagement Pressies for Wills and Kate‘. It’s a sign of the times that I first discovered the news by reading a blog post and not the newspaper.

And in honour of this historic news we banded together for a ‘formal’ photograph in the garden this morning (it’s the only time the girls aren’t covered in paint, dirt or food and have their hair reasonably tidy). Also, being Wardrobe Wednesday I actually made an effort (yesterday I couldn’t face getting out of my p-jays till 2pm and it took me that long to wash my face and clean my teeth!).

We had quite a giggle with the self timer. The girls wanted to take turns to run from the camera to the bench and pose in 10 seconds. The cat also kept jumping in and out of the frame.

Now the theme this week, on Wardrobe Wednesday, is supposed to be bravely revealing what we wore to our old school ball. Seeing as I was sweet 16 (at some point) in the 1980’s, also the decade when Prince William’s father walked down the aisle with Princess Diana (the People’s Princess and forever in our hearts), I thought it very fitting that I pulled out my old ball photo.

Curls and floral were all in vogue the year of my school ball! I ditched the florals when I was 18 and 21 – but still had the curls going on! Tee hee!

  1. We wish them every happiness too and LOVE the photos of you both as you both met at Uni too …you are indeed a very special couple and your journey is just so insperational..having just celebrated our 40th this year as one old film says ‘We must have done something good’….take care loves.

  2. I am really happy for Will & Kate, too πŸ™‚ My Mum had a book about Princess Diana and when I was a little girl I used to spend hours looking at all the photos. I wanted an engagement ring just like her’s! And I did get a sapphire & diamond one, just nowhere near as big, tee hee.

Yay for old ball photos! You look very pretty in all of them and wow – you look as youthful today as you did back then! What’s your secret!?

  3. When you see photos like that of the future King and Queen, it reminds you how far back British heritage stretches. There hasn’t been a King William for 170 odd years, or a Queen Catherine since Charles II’s spouse, and before that three! of Henry VIII’s wives.

Mind you, there’s never been a King Daniel or Queen Sarah, so keep the silver polished, ditch the cat and invest in some corgis. You never know when the call might come…

  4. You have inspired me to get my tripod out!
I would love to have a family photo like yours – so beautiful and a moment captured forever!

I also loved you Stevie Nicks black dress – I had one similar.

Just realized in this post that you ARE from the UK. So cool that you actually went to a ball – here that only happens in fairy tales.

    Many blessing, Nicole

  5. I knew her ring look very similar
    how special πŸ™‚

Prince William has been my favourite royal for a long time

Your very pretty in pink πŸ™‚

neat photos of your ball dresses
I never went to high school balls

  6. Great photos, it is definately something we should try…and great news about Kate and Wills… My family is english except for my second brother and myself, so the royal family has always been special to us, that and yorkshire pud! yum!

  7. Great work on the family shots. They’re awesome. I can’t believe you all got yourselves organised enough to do that first thing in the morning..big kudos! And yes we were rather thrilled to hear the royal news here too. Mark’s is a bit of a royalist and his tongue-in-cheek comment was ‘I wonder if I can get myself an invite to the wedding’. To which I replied ‘Why don’t you ask them for the airfare home while you’re at it?!’

  8. P.S. Love the ball shots….brings back so many memories seeing photos of that era. Can’t think where any of mine are…probably at mum and dads…lucky for everyone hey!

  9. How lovely to come over here and see such gorgeous photos of you and your family. The Wardrobe Wednesday is a new one on me but your frocks brought back happy memories for me – I didn’t have a school prom so my first ball was in Cambridge in 1983 and was magical – all frothy Princess Di taffeta creations.

Many thanks for popping by on my blog.

  10. Great family pics – you all look just lovely.

And yes, the Commonwealth will be in overdrive with the upcoming royal wedding. Nice touch with Di’s ring though.

  11. Wow! How special to get married in the same year as a ‘Royal Wedding’! Hope your plans are all going well. You must be so excited. x

  12. Thanks. The Wardrobe Wednesday was set up a couple of months ago by a Kiwi blogger at ‘Green Valley Crafts’. It’s a bit of fun and gets us SAHM’s to make an effort one a week πŸ˜‰

  13. It was an unexpected early start – everyone awake with the birds and finished breakfast by 7am! The girls were playing in the garden and looked lovely. I’d actually made an effort, washed my face and put some make-up on (for a change), so I figured – must do the family photo to send with all the Christmas cards (economy deadline to UK on Monday 22 Nov!!!).

Will be an amazing atmosphere in England for the Royal Wedding of the Century!!

  14. I LOVE Yorkshire pud! My Grandmother was born in Somerset, but spent most of her chilldhood in Yorkshire – she made THE BEST Yorkshire pudding πŸ™‚ mmmmm

  15. Thanks so much. Dan and I met at Uni and he took a while to make an honest woman of me πŸ˜‰ so I know how Kate has felt all these years… ha, ha! x

  16. Aww, you got a sapphire & diamond!

I was in Germany when Princess Diana got married. I can remember watching it with my Mum on TV and listening to it all in German! We were in Germany for six weeks and my Mum (being a teacher) made sure we kept a scrap book – on the front cover was Charles & Diana!

As to the secret of youth… ha, ha, I’m not sure – a good camera πŸ˜‰ and Oil of Olay!

  17. Thanks! Just realised my first ball was actually in 1990 – ended up doing the maths – but the eighties permed hair thing was still very much in vogue! Arrrr!

  18. Awww Sarah that’s so lovely, especially from your lovely Mum and Dad. I am full of admiration for couples who really have lasted the distance. You really do look a foxy chic in the ball photos and a foxy Mumma in the recent ones. Can’t wait to catch up and have a gas, love Vix xx

  19. Cheers Vix! You’re too kind. Look forward to meeting you in person in January – I shall have to live up to ‘foxy Mumma’ in real life now πŸ˜‰ ha, ha!

My Mum and Dad really are very special. My Dad is one of seven and all of his siblings are with their original partners. And my Mum’s sister celebrated her 40th Wedding Anniversary recently too. I feel very fortunate to have had so many positive influences in my life.

Thinking of you as you get all your family and gear together for the big trip, love Sarah x

  20. Love seeing your family photos!! You’ve given me hope to try and get a nice one with us and our four kids (and dog and cat?) – hope… not sure if I’ll actually attempt it though! πŸ˜‰

  21. Wow – I’m so impressed that you have managed a formal family photo with the self-timer and everyone looking at the camera and no funny faces!! That would never happen in our house πŸ˜‰

Thanks for visiting Nay’s Place and leaving a comment πŸ™‚
