It fell like any other leaf,
having given one last show of colour.
It lost its grip, as the daylight diminished,
and the winds started to blow.
I looked up, as a whirl of wind caught my breath,
and took me in its autumn dance.
The golden leaves formed a tunnel,
wrapping me in their embrace.
My body span with the motion,
my arms reached out, waiting.
It fell in my outstretched hand,
as others flew down around me.
My hand closed gently around it,
clasping the last of its life.
A once green bud of promise,
now blazing a trail,
on its journey back to the earth.

so lovely! I love the idea/feeling of holding the last of its life in your palm. Energising and draining at the same town!
Thanks sweetie, you’ve summed up my feelings of this time of year perfectly – sometimes uplifted – and at others drained with the diminishing light! xx
Took me a moment to realise that it was autumn in NZ and not spring, of course – thought maybe you’d written this a while ago… I love the idea of the leaf on a journey back to the earth at the end of its life. It is something I like about the seasons, that they go round and round and round, something you can rely on.
What an intensely lovely observational poem. As Judith said, you can always rely on the seasons. Beautifully written, thank you so much for linking to Prose For Thought xx
I so enjoy reading the lovely poems that are linked up to Prose For Thought. I love autumn and I’m sure every leaf has its own story to tell xx
Just a lovely poem and beautiful to read….the buds on our trees in the garden are beginning to unfurl and every Spring I marvel at the way nature works its magic!!
As our new leaves unfurl I can picture the leaves there as they tumble in glorious colours to make a carpet where they lay..
Autumn is my favourite season and your words and pictures are truly beautiful xx
this is such a lovely poem xxx
A very beautiful poem. I adore looking at nature, and you have really captured what autumn means. Just lovely xx
