For a population of 190,500 Wellington City is certainly full of a vibrant, creative population that really knows how to party! Cuba Street Carnival celebrated it’s 10th Anniversary and was bigger than ever. Wellington City Council are fabulously conducive to big events. Superbly organized in closing down roads and making it possible for the city to party. Courtenay Place, a single street dedicated to entertainment, with theatres, clubs, restaurants and bars, was closed to traffic and turned into a haven for Cuban festivities! Stages sprouted up around the town and areas corned off for street bars. The weather Gods played a trump card and people turned up in droves to dance the night away.
What a fabulous night! Dan and I partied the night away (well, we could have done – but knowing a 7am wake up call was likely… we came home at 2am). After the parade, and a little people watching (so many beautiful people!), we danced at Boogie Wonderland (good ‘ole music with the all essential multitude of glitter balls and a flashing dance-floor.
Prior to the parade we took the girls in for a little taster of the Cuba Festival, and watched in awe as women in g-strings stood bravely to have bikinis painted on! Charli had her face painted before beating Dan and I at ten-pin bowling at The Lanes.

Whow….what a fabulous night you must have had….it all looks so colourful and full of energy!! We can just see you dancing the night away!! Just lovely you could have such a fabulous night out together and also great to hear the girls got a taster of it earlier in the day.Just wonderful!!
Oh yes, there was lots of dancing and hip wiggling!
That looks awesome, so nice to hear you have had a good night out, together! I loved the video, it was definately more lively for the adults than the Santa Parade! I can imagine a few wines would make some of those costumes even more magical!
Hope you had a good night with Rach…see you soon xxx
Thanks sweetie, definitely recommend it. There were a few children about, but they all looked very overwhelmed – as it was busy and unless they were on the shoulders of a loving, strong, adult, they couldn’t see a darn thing apart from knees! xx
Ah, I haven’t been to Welly in ages and never to to the Cuba St Carnival. Looks like fun. You go girl, for staying out til 2am – can’t remember the last time I did that *sigh*
I’m not a dirty stop out that often! Tee hee! It’s only been the past six month’s that I’ve really started going out big time (I just loved being a hermit in the first couple of year’s of motherhood – well at night time anyway!). Plus, I didn’t feel ready to leave my babes for a looonng time – I’m such a softie – well, in some ways!
This is such a more pleasant experience than the Notting Hill Carnival in London which is so big/crowded/claustrobic. A Wellington Carnival is so much more my thing. Great video. You can really sense the occasion!
Thanks, Julie. I have to say I saw more of the carnival from the camera (held above the heads of people in front) than I actually saw with my own eyes! However, the floats and atmosphere were fabulous and the mood so chilled. There were people of all ages out enjoying themselves and many had gone out of their way to dress up for a night of Cuban partying!
Looks like you all had a lot of fun. 🙂 Your pics are great. I just wanted to say hello. Have a great weekend.
Lynnette
Hi Lynnette and thanks so much for stopping by. Sorry I’ve opted out of the memory lane thing – just was too much for me. Best wishes though – it’s a wonderful idea and you’ve brought so many lovely people together. xx
Looks like an amazingly colourful night! Do they do it every year?
Yes, every year! Fabulous hey! This year was the 10th Anniversary. Some wonderfully creative people in Welly – it rocks!
