On Sunday ‘avo we took a walk along View Road, overlooking Lyall Bay, and were amazed at the incredibly high tide. We’ve never seen it as high. It was breaking over the sea wall and drenching people walking past. As we made our way down from the ridge to the bay we saw a family, who were just on the edge of the beach as a wave retreated, suddenly find themselves waist deep in water! Every man and his dog was out making the most of the much missed sunshine. The waves were incredible. I’ve tried to Google and find out the cause, but couldn’t find any reports. Perhaps a delayed affect of last week’s large earthquake?!

Wish I’d seen it…. sounds fantastic.
Ah William, they’ll be another day, of that I am certain Sarah 🙂
That’s an amazing photograph. Reminds me that I really should get out again and do a tour of the bays to take some pictures.
Well, next time you do, make sure you flick me an e-mail before hand and you can swing by for a cuppa at Chez Lee!
Beautiful Lyall Bay…have to say those waves look just too big and breaking fast for Grandma and Granddad to go for a swim or a paddle….but it looks very beautiful. We have had some fun times there and loved strolling along View Road.
Oh yes, scary stuff! There were a couple of crazy kayakers enjoying paddling out and riding the surf back in – very entertaining to watch. I always think of you when we’re there and so looking forward to making more happy memories with you on the beach this coming Kiwi summer! x
Gorgeous pic! Don’t you just love that so much natural beauty can be found right in the nation’s capital?
Sure do! Doesn’t feel like living in a city at all when we’re living out here on the coast – though I do have to escape into the countryside over your way from time to time – need my fix of sheep, cows and hens (and good wine – when I’m not pregnant that is!).
Oh look at that bay. It looks simply divine!
Ah yes, but it’s cold, very, very cold – a heavy duty wet-suit is seriously recommended!
there is something about just looking at the bubbliness of waves that instantly brings the sights and smells into view.
i am definitely heading over the bridge to the mount beach this weekend X
Oh how I lurve the Mount! Hope you had a fabulous time! x
That’s a wonderful photo of the Bay!
We were in New Plymouth that same day taking photos of some HUGE waves. Since there had been a tornado in Opunake the day (or two) before, I thought it was part of that storm. Your earthquake theory sounds just as plausible.
Thanks Betty. New Plymouth has some amazing black sand beaches too – I remember a very happy camping trip there once upon a time before children – in our little 2 person tent… I spent most of my time starting out at the deep contrast of bright red Pohutukawa and the volcanic black sand, whilst doing lots of experimental pastel drawings
