Blue Sky!

After last night’s post of gloomy weather we woke this morning to such a treat – blue sky! It’s calm, sunny and the day is full of promise. Heading out around the bays for some fresh sea air and to check out the new Chocolate Fish at Shelly Bay.

School holidays are over and spring temperatures of 15 degrees have returned; which will make for much more pleasant school and kindi drop-offs and pick-ups.

Thank you heavens above for watering our garden, but really we have enough for a wee while. By all means rain your heart out at night whilst we sleep, but bless our days with sunshine for it makes us such happy souls πŸ™‚ x

UPDATE 14 October:

The new Chocolate Fish round at Shelly Bay is not yet open so we drove round to Scorching Bay and stopped off at the cafe there (it’s okay, but not a patch on the old Chocolate Fish). I still don’t understand how higher rents could have pushed out Chocolate Fish and then another cafe come along and fill its spot? Anyone know? Anyway, it was good to enjoy the fresh air over a cuppa – even if the chill factor of a mean wind did keep us from lingering for too long.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing some DIY on the playhouse in the garden. The girls helped Dan to hammer in some interior walls and give them a coat of primer in preparation for chalk board paint – very ‘Famous Five’. I can see some serious plans being hatched on the new chalk board walls!

Please let us know what the New Chocolate Fish is like – I cant wait to try it out πŸ™‚

    Hxxx

Alas not quite open yet – a big sign said ‘Opening 12th October-ish’ – so we’ll have to wait and see! It’s in a good position to capture the afternoon sun. We ended up going round to Scorching Bay and the new cafe there was fine, but nothing can compare to the old Chocolate Fish – the staff really made it something else. Enjoy the blue sky! x
  2. I’ve loved reading about all your family adventures – although I think I’ll pass on the details of your return journey across the Cook Strait. You look glowingly pregnant, delighted everything is going so well and the girls are looking forward to the new arrival.

We had wonderful weather in the UK so it was a terrible shock to come back to the delightful cold of Wellington. Having said that it’s been amazing today (Sunday) and we joined the crowds in Wellington for a while before retreating back to the country to enjoy the sun. Hope you’re right about the watering regime but I fear we have more to come.

Not sure I like the idea for the new Chocolate Fish Cafe. Somethings are best left to memories although I’m sure we’ll try it out just to see when it finally does open.

Aye, the new Chocolate Fish can’t ever replace the old. The location just isn’t the same. There’s no actual outlook from the cafe – it’s fenced in and tucked back from the foreshore and obviously the menu will be very different. However, it’s nice to think there will be another place for a coffee pit-stop on the bay run and the whole Shelly Bay area is so prime for redevelopment at some stage. And I’m sure the new Chocolate Fish will be well staffed, as are all the Chocolate ‘enterprises’ – i.e. Chocolate Frog in Miramar and Chocolate Dayz at Days Bay. They share a wonderful spirit of fabulous service above and beyond and there’s something about those wooden, painted chairs that I just love!
  3. oh i am so rubbish when it rains.
    it affects my mood instantly.
weird thing – got sunburnt yesterday at the beach and today i’m wearing three layers again!!!!
    come on, summer!!!!!!!!!!!! X

Arrr, this spring is really dicing with us isn’t it?! I am making sure every sunny day counts at the moment. Won’t be too much longer and the BBQ will be (hopefully) firing on all cylinders x
  4. I know right? I almost fainted when the sun shone yesterday. Back to grey again here today though….I think I’ll move back to Wellys!

It hasn’t been much better in Welly, but the temperatures are looking up again and the more glimmers of blue sky the better πŸ™‚
  5. Hi loves…just got back from Penarth and enjoyed some lovely sunshine and saw some beautiful views across the channel to Western and all…..walked along the pier and brought back some lovely memories….just magic!!

So many happy memories. I’d love to visit there again. Penarth will always hold a special place in my heart xx
  6. Yes, thank goodness for the sun as of late! Too bad to hear about the Chocolate Fish. When I read about the it re-opening in Shelly Bay I though it just wouldn’t be the same. Can we stage a protest and get them reinstated at Scorching Bay?! A cafe sit in or something?!

Aye, it was made for Scorching Bay. The new place just doesn’t have the same quirks that made the Chocolate Fish so unique and magic.
  7. Hiya,

Just for your info..not sure if you know already…I was googling to find out when Chocolate Fish Cafe was opening (hence I stumbled upon your site) and I found a blog entry of someone who had just been: http://freshnewday.net/2009/10/17/047-chocolate-fish/
Looks like they opened on 16 Oct with a new BBQ style menu.
I wonder how it will compare to the scorching bay site?

    All the best!

Thanks so much! I’ve just read that write up and the review is everything I expected. Sounds like they’ve been super creative and reinvented themselves in a uniquely Chocolate Fish way. Can’t wait to try!
