The Tongariro Crossing: A Poem

The theme for Lyrical Sunday (running all this week till 14 August) is ‘Adventure‘ and Grandma sent through a beautiful poem about the time she walked ‘The Tongariro Crossing‘ in New Zealand with Granddad… (Happy 41st Wedding Anniversary to them too!). x

The Tongariro Crossing

One day in the year 2008
An 8-hour walk. We couldn’t wait!
What an adventure we had in store,
We felt like explorers – not been there before.

Mt Ngauruhoe

We started off along a track,
Nothing now would hold us back.
We then began to climb up high,
The Giant’s Staircase to the sky.

Higher still we seemed to climb
What we saw was just sublime.
Emerald lakes, red craters too
A stop for lunch to admire the view.

Red Crater

Time to get going back down the track
With singing hearts and bags on our backs.
In future years we’ll look back and say
These photos! – What a memorable day.
